This is the first restaurant review that I have done on this blog. I’m not sure why, I will definitely start doing more. This experience struck me so much that I felt obligated to post a review both here and on the Urban Spoon website. I took pictures but I really don’t feel the need to bother you with those too.
When you enter Tagura it appears that you are going to receive a good meal. They make it appear that they are making everything to order and fresh as possible with the open kitchen. I was very excited to get my food and try it.
I ordered a spicy tuna roll. From my experience of eating sushi everywhere from Sushi Morimoto to a grocery store you would expect raw ahi tuna, spices, and perhaps some avacado rolled into nori with rice. Instead what I received was canned tuna rolled into nori with rice. Disgusting is all I can say. I tried a couple and all I could taste was the fishy taste of canned tuna.
Next came our “Bento Boxes”. This is a clever idea and I thought it was going to be good. I was again disappointed. My teriyaki chicken was very fatty, the sauce was ok, but nothing worth going back for. My wife’s beef ribs were not as advertised either. It was a very small portion and the spice was not noticeable. The rice with our meals was also no good. My fried rice appeared to be the same as my wife’s brown rice and it had never been fried. My pork pot stickers were also mediocre at best. I have had better pot stickers that went from the freezer to the deep fryer than these. The Kim Chi was tolerable, but again nothing worth finishing.
Just so you don’t think that I am just bashing the place for no reason, the crab rangoons were not bad. In fact they were the best part of the dinner. They were large and the flavor was decent.
Overall I would never recommend this restaurant. Tagura has nice presentation, but terrible food. If you are looking for Asian fast food, which in reality most Asian food is anyways, then go to a China Wok.
